When a dog is found in Malden, Downtown Paw works closely with Malden Animal Control to help bring them home safely. Our team follows a clear, city‑approved process to make reunification fast, safe, and stress‑free for both pets and their families.
How the Process Works
- Immediate Safety & Scan Every found dog is brought inside, secured, and scanned with our universal microchip reader. If the chip is registered, we contact the owner right away.
- Coordination With Malden Animal Control All found dogs in Malden fall under the jurisdiction of Malden Animal Control. We notify them immediately and follow their guidance on next steps, documentation, and owner verification.
- Temporary Holding If Animal Control instructs us to hold the dog, Downtown Paw provides safe, climate‑controlled temporary housing, meals, and grooming (depending on the condition of the dog when they arrive)
- Holding fee: $75 per day (set by the Malden Animal Control).
- Owner Verification & Release Once ownership is confirmed (through vet records and rabies certificates), dogs are released directly to their families or transferred to Malden Animal Control depending on the situation.

what if The dog has a microchip?
If the dog has a microchip that is registered with a lost pet company, we are able to use this information to contact the owner and get the pet returned.
what if The dog has no microchip?
If there is no chip found when we scan, the dog will be posted in local group on social media to help track down the owner. They are held with us until the end of business day and then transferred to the state holding facility in Revere.
what if The microchip is unregistered?
Although the dog may have a chip that we can scan, they are often unregistered or have outdated information. Microchip companies can sometimes tell us the vet clinic or rescue where the microchip was sold to. We can then use that information to try and track down a current owner.
HOw long will the dog be held for?
Dogs are held for 10 days before being considered abandon. If there has been no contact with the owners, or if no one has claimed the dog, they are then put up for adoption.
